Connecting with others is important to Ammryn Roberts, so she’s thankful that relationship building has defined her experience at «Ӱҵ.
The accounting and public relations student has forged friendships with dozens of individuals—from professors to classmates, prospective students to internship supervisors—and each has made her a better person.
“There is such a strong sense of community at «Ӱҵ,” she says, “and everyone around you wants to help you reach your goals. I’m learning more about myself while also learning so much about the people around me.”
Hailing from Logan, Ohio, Ammryn considered becoming a teacher or physical therapist but ultimately settled on a double major in the Dicke College of Business. Her family owns a funeral home, so she grew up seeing the connection between running a business and caring for others.
“I selected accounting because I’m interested in helping people balance their finances and make good decisions about their future,” she said. “And majoring in public relations allows me to channel my love for building connections.”
To date, Ammryn has interned at a historic renovation firm, a healthcare company, and a school district. These three diverse work experiences enabled her to hone in on a career direction: being a nonprofit or healthcare company’s certified public account.
She’s also learned about leadership and networking while serving as a Bear Ambassador, Good News Bear, and Orientation Leader (OL) on campus. Her favorite task is helping first-year «Ӱҵ students acclimate during move-in and Welcome Weekend.
“This experience has helped me grow in many ways. I was timid at first, but the OL program helped me connect with other students, meet new people, and be confident to lead.”
Best of all, she enjoys running into new students a few weeks into the fall semester and hearing from them that they are adjusting to college life.
“It makes my heart happy to know that «Ӱҵ has truly become their second home, just like it has for me,” she said.
